Tourism is a good thing for a place such as Batanes for it brings new job opportunities to its locals. But some parts of tourism can take its toll to the environment. With this in mind, there will be a new Fee for Ecotourism that will be charged to tourists coming to Batanes.

The Province of Batanes has come up with the Provincial Ordinance No. 146 that all incoming tourist should be aware about, since this will directly affect all tourists and visitors to the beautiful northernmost islands of the Philippines.
This Batanes Ordinance 146 prescribes a unified sustainable ecotourism development fee. Read below for a snippet of this ordinance.
SECTION 1. TITLE. This ordinance shall be known as the Batanes Sustainable Ecotourism Fee of 2015.
SECTION 2. DECLARATION OF POLICY. The adoption of this ordinance is in line with the province’s commitment to support the policy of the state to ensure sustainable use development, management, protection and conservation of the country’s environment and natural resources and cultural heritage for the enjoyment of the present and future generations.
SECTION 5. SCOPE OF APPLICATION.
- The provision of this section shall apply to:
- All tourists who visit and enjoy the natural scenery of Batanes.
- Exemption from payment:
- Persons of ages 12 years old and below
- Government official/s who come to Batanes to perform official functions.
- Visitors who arrive for purposes of scientific / academic research with prior consent and authority of the PAMB, NCIP, and/or LGUs of Batanes and upon presentation of a letter of endorsement or mission order signed by his/her agency head.
SECTION 7. SCHEDULE OF FEES
- Visitor’s Sustainable Ecotourism Fee of Php350.00
- Senior Citizens and Differently Abled persons shall have a discount of 20%.
SECTION 14. PENALTIES AND SANCTIONS
- Any walk—in tourist who refuses to pay the Sustainable Ecotourism Development fee shall be penalized with a fine of P1,000.
- Misrepresentation of one’s identity, residency, and the like in order to avoid payment of the fee shall be penalized by paying P5,000.
This ordinance is effective April 1, 2016 and is approved by Provincial Governor Hon. Vicente Gato.
